Heidi Csernak - Two Visits in Three Months

Updated: Oct 2

"staying an extra day or two at the edge of the Arctic is worth it."

In June, Heidi Csernak visited Cochrane, Moosonee and Moose Factory. She only had time for one night in Moosonee and Moose Factory. It was not enough time. This September she returned for four days. Below are some excerpts from her recent travel blog posts (which you can read and see more of here).

“If we don’t turn back now, we’ll be surfing back on 7 to 8 foot waves,” Kyle says to me.

“Wait, what?”

🌊🌊🌊

On my first trip to Moosonee in June, I only stayed one night and travelled by train, leaving little time for a tour with Kyle Linklater-Wong, owner/operator of James Bay Adventures.

I thought that reaching the James Bay safely was heavily reliant on the tides (which turn about every 6.25 hours), but I found out that it’s actually the (high) wind that can cause unsafe conditions for boating to James Bay.

Rain or sunshine, the tour can go on, but when the winds reach 35-40 kph and the tide turns, waves in the bay can reach heights of 7 to 8 feet, and that’s not an “adventure” I’d like to experience.

I decided to return (in September) and stay for four days, so Kyle could select the best day for boating on the Moose River, and see James Bay with the sun shining.

So take it from me - and these comparison photos - that staying an extra day or two at the edge of the Arctic is worth it.

We met as partners in tourism, and we parted as friends.

I have gone on a few unofficial tours during my trips. Most recently, I went on a driving tour of Moosonee with Kyle (owner of James Bay Adventures and Moose River Heritage and Hospitality Association elected board member), and Stan Louttit (Team Member of the Moose River Heritage and Hospitality Association) drove me around Moose Factory during my September visit.

You may have heard that I’ll decline special access for photos, preferring to present my journeys in a way that you can step into my shoes and see the sights from the very same perspective available to all travellers.
